Understanding the Compatibility Results

This tool compares typical care requirements and common behavioural risks. It is designed to show useful evidence, not to guarantee that every individual fish will behave the same way.

Predator Status

None — Not normally a predator of common aquarium tankmates.

Microfauna — Eats tiny organisms such as copepods, worms, seed shrimp and biofilm fauna.

Snails — May hunt or consume aquarium snails.

Shrimp Fry — May eat baby shrimp, but adult shrimp are usually less at risk.

Shrimp — Adult dwarf shrimp may be eaten.

Nano Fish — Very small fish may be eaten.

Small Fish — Small community fish may be eaten.

Large Fish — Capable of eating larger tankmates.

Fin Nipping

No — Not commonly associated with fin damage.

Occasional — May nip fins under certain conditions, especially with long-finned or slow fish.

Yes — Known fin-nipping behaviour. Use caution with Bettas, fancy guppies, angelfish and other long-finned species.

Boisterous

No — Generally calm and unlikely to disturb tankmates.

Moderate — Active enough to bother very shy or slow species.

Yes — Very active fish that can stress slower, timid or delicate tankmates.

Aggression

Peaceful — Usually tolerant of suitable tankmates.

Semi-Aggressive — May become territorial or pushy, especially when mature, breeding or kept in cramped conditions.

Aggressive — Regular territorial or hostile behaviour should be expected.

Highly Aggressive — Best treated as specialist-only or species-specific in most cases.

Water Overlap

Temperature, pH and hardness are compared by finding the shared overlap between both species.

If there is no overlap, the tool will flag a major issue.

If there is overlap, that does not automatically mean the fish are perfect tankmates. Behaviour and tank size still matter.

Tank Requirements

The tool shows the larger minimum tank length and volume required by either species.

This is a conservative guide. Larger aquariums are often safer, especially for active, territorial or messy species.

Important Note

Compatibility can be affected by tank size, aquascape layout, hiding places, group size, sex ratios, feeding, age and individual behaviour. Use this tool as a starting point, then observe your animals carefully.
